The opening chapter of Kevin Brockmeier's extraordinary new novel, "The Brief History of the Dead," is as breathtaking as any fiction I have read in the past few years. People who have died describe their crossing over into a nameless city in the afterlife. To one blind man, the crossing felt like he walked for days through a desert.

Sydney: The oath-laden slogan of Australia's new tourism advertising campaign - "So where the bloody hell are you?" - has irked critics who say it would offend Asians and baffle Americans.

Former chief executive of Hermes Pensions Management, Tony Watson, has been named chairman of the Marks & Spencer pension scheme.

The M&S pension trustees are notorious for refusing to meet Philip Green when he attempted to buy the retailer in 2004, in what proved to be the deciding factor in him walking away from the bid.

Watson should be no stranger to trustee activism, having run activist fund manager Hermes, which manages BT's Ł23bn pension fund.




Museum's visitors can soon spend a day as a slave

The Museum of Slavery and Civil Rights here plans to offer a new frontier in "experiential tourism" this spring: a day as a slave.

"In order to heal, we must embrace the history of slavery here in America," said Afriye We-kandodis, the museum's director.

Not everyone is so excited. Selma booster George Swift steers visitors to the National Voting Rights Museum, but he's not as enthusiastic about its sister attraction.
